That's Haute - Appalachian Journey

That's Haute - Appalachian Journey

What do we even DO in the off-season?

Well, while we’re already thinking about the cyclocross season 2026, we’re doing OTHER forms of cycling like mountain bikes, gravel bikes and road bikes (and some Bike Polo). And, while we think gravel racing is stupid, we sure do love us the odd adventure cycling event. One in particular we are all really excited for is the Appalachian Journey.

Many of us have done this event many times, and myself have done it every year it’s been offered. It really is the coolest adventure cycling event I’ve ever been to. The vibes are immaculate, the aid stations are TOPS (we’re not talking little cups of gummy bears and goldfish here) with hot food, sandwiches, a variety of drinks and the occasional bluegrass band in tow.

Oh, and don’t miss the moonshine cart at the half-way point.

My friends and I have approached this event casually over the years. We know we can ride a certain pace to make fairly quick work of the 100+ mile course over the course of the short, early-April day, so we don’t stress ourselves out in the beginning. Waking up early is already a challenge. We like to take it slow and if we miss the start, so be it. We’ll catch up. :)

The front of the event is certainly more of a race. Duos style. There is even a mega long version that sets off in the dark hours of the morning for those seeking the ultimate adventure.

The routes have always been primo. The gravel riding out around Floyd is really some of the best the state has to offer. My first time at App Journey I was reminded of the well-maintained, beautiful dirt roads of Vermont. Everywhere you turn, the view opens up to another mountain hollow (pronounced holler) or grand valley vista.

The event also encourages team-work. You roll this as a duo, so find a teammate and register together. Bring a bigger squad for maximum fun. The last few years we’ve done this as a group of 8 or more and it’s just the most fun day you could have on a bike. Help each other, encourage each other, share some snacks and have fun. Golly, I can’t wait.

Oh, and the Haute Sauce gobbles this area up nicely.

Thanks Gordon and Emy for throwing such a killer event. That's Haute.
